One of the most common questions people have before receiving a distant Reiki treatment is, “What will I feel?” The honest answer is that experiences can vary widely. Some people have noticeable experiences, others feel very little. Reiki does not rely on strong sensations to be effective; the energy works whether you consciously feel it or not. Some people may feel that their treatment was subtle, but over the following days they can tell things have shifted for them and they are feeling better. Experiences also vary between one treatment and another.
It is worth mentioning a few of the more common experiences. During or after a session, many people notice a sense of deep relaxation– a feeling that tensions are dissolving. Many people notice that they let out a deep sigh during their treatment. Some individuals experience physical sensations such as warmth or coolness, tingling, heaviness or lightness in different parts of the body. During the treatment people may see lights or colours, even though their eyes are closed.
It’s not uncommon for feelings to surface. You might experience unexpected tears followed by a sense of relief, or even moments of quiet joy. Some people notice memories or imagery appearing briefly, while others feel a calm, spacious quality inside— as if there is more room to breathe. You may feel sleepy during or after the session, or notice deeper sleep and vivid dreams during the night.
In the hours or days that follow, the effects can continue to unfold. You may find your thoughts becoming clearer, with less mental clutter and more ease in decision-making. You might realise you’re responding differently to situations, feeling steadier, or less emotionally overwhelmed than before.
It’s also worth remembering that no two sessions feel exactly the same, as our needs naturally change over time. The most helpful approach is to stay relaxed and open, without trying to overanalyse or force any particular experience. Whether your treatment feels emotional, peaceful, noticeable, or very subtle; taking it as it comes supports a gentle, natural return to balance.
