Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Reiki, distant healing, and what to expect from your session.

Reiki is a universal energy. It is present everywhere, in all life. Reiki practitioners learn to work with, or channel, this energy in a way that is beneficial to the recipient's health and well-being.

This energy is recognised in many ancient traditions. Reiki is an approach that comes from Japan, where the energy is called ki. The current approach was taught by Mikao Usui, and from a line of his students was brought to the West. In China this energy is called Qi. Acupuncture, QiGong and Tai Chi work with this energy. Yoga also works with this energy. In India it is called prana.

Reiki is often described as an ‘intelligent’ energy. It requires a trained practitioner to give Reiki to another person, but the practitioner is really just a facilitator. With the right technique and the intention to give healing to an individual the energy does all the ‘work’. I can use this to heal a person in front of me, but I can use it equally as effectively on a person at the other side of the world. Reiki is a universal life force energy, which is everywhere and within each of us, it is ‘intelligent’ enough to work at a distance. Space is no barrier.

For those who would be interested in understanding a scientific explanation for how distant healing could work you might be interested in the field of quantum mechanics– in which there is the phenomenon of non-locality.

People's experiences vary. It’s possible to have a wide variety of experiences, or to feel very little. However certain experiences are more common than others. To read more about what a Reiki treatment can feel like read my blog post here.

As is the case with the treatment, reactions after the treatment can vary. Reiki is doing different things to each individual according to their own needs. The effects of the treatment may be felt during the session, or in the hours or days following the session.

You could feel energised, or find you need to take more rest. You could feel calmer and find that it is easier to cope with challenges, you may also notice that some emotional blockages are released leading to a feeling of greater lightness. It can help with any area of our mental, emotional or physical life. It addresses what you need at the time. To mention just a few examples—some people come to Reiki to help them with their anxiety or stress, others to cope with and recover from a difficult emotional time. People also receive Reiki to help with physical healing from injury or illness, for example.

Reiki doesn’t take away the difficulties in life, but it does help us to cope with challenging times. It gives inner strength, so we can deal with whatever comes our way. It has also been found to connect people with a more authentic version of themselves.

Reiki works well with conventional medicine and other alternative therapies.

There are no disadvantages to Reiki. This energy will always give you what you need. There are no circumstances in which it could ever be harmful. However it is good to be aware that the treatment will have effects, and not be surprised if you do feel some emotions being released, or find you are tired, or notice some physical problems being addressed. It’s not necessarily so, but it’s probably sensible not to schedule Reiki just before you’re going to run a marathon.

No. People come to Reiki with all sorts of perspectives, including healthy scepticism. There’s no requirement to believe in it for you to benefit from the energy.

I like to compare it to electricity—you don’t need to understand how it works in order to feel the warmth of a heater, see a light turn on or hear the radio playing. In a similar way, Reiki is a form of energy that works whether or not you fully believe in it or understand it. If Reiki energy is directed towards you it will have an effect— regardless of your belief or whether you notice it.

Everyone can benefit from Reiki. Which one of us isn’t in need of a helpful balancing boost to our mental, emotional, or physical well-being?

Anyone with health concerns should consult their doctor. Reiki is not a diagnostic approach
